1. Why do you think Aaron Copland named this piece "Fanfare for the Common Man?"
2. If this music was playing during a movie, what would be happening on the screen?
or 3. If you could give the piece another title, what would it be, and why?
I did tell them that a fanfare was originally a piece for brass that announced a royal entrance (yea- the King is here!) And that the "common man" really meant all of mankind, so that includes all humans, not just men. That information did influence some of their answers, but I felt they needed to know those 2 basic pieces of information. I picked out 10 of the best in each of the 4th grade classes and put them on the hallway bulletin board. Our district is encouraging writing in all areas, so when I have the time and opportunity to do it, I want to make sure the parents and my principal see it.
